Older Blind Services provide specialized training to assist consumers in maintaining independence in their homes and communities. Our services can help consumers build the skills and confidence to navigate their environment and perform everyday tasks with greater independence.

Are you eligible?

You may qualify for services if you:

  • Are age 55 or older
  • Need support to maintain your independence
  • Have documentation of legal blindness
    • Have a central visual acuity of 20/200 in the better eye even with the best corrective lenses (they see at 20 feet what a person without low vision would see at 200 feet), OR
    • Have a visual field of 20 degrees or less (they see objects within 20 degrees of the direction they are facing while a person without low vision would see objects within 180 degrees) OR
  • Have documentation of a progressive eye condition that may result in legal blindness within 24 months
  • Are available to receive services in South Carolina and require those services to maintain independence

Documentation of legal blindness or progressive eye condition should be current (within the past 12 months).

Our counselors help determine your eligibility and assess your individual concerns about performing daily living activities with vision loss. We consider medical issues, family support, current living situation, and comprehensive needs when developing your service plan.

Note: If you are age 55 or older and employed, but otherwise meet these requirements, you may receive assistance through Vocational Rehabilitation Services instead of Older Blind Services.
